In one of the most memorable scenes in Cameron Crowe’s epic rock movie Almost Famous, the guys in Stillwater celebrate together when they find out that they made the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Jason Lee, as Stillwater’s front man Jeff Bebe, leads the group through a seemingly spontaneous rendition of “The Cover of 'Rolling Stone',” a lament from the perspective of a frustrated musician imagining the rush he’d get from seeing his mug on the front of rock’s seminal magazine.
The song certainly fits the era, as it was a top ten hit for Dr. Hook (later Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show) in 1972. Its debut and lone appearance at the tour opener in Inglewood on 2/14/03 was also one of the most appropriate Phish song placements ever – the band was about to appear on the magazine's cover for the first time in the issue dated March 6, 2003.
